How do I apply for a grant?

When a call for ideas is open on the website, click ‘Apply for Support’ to be directed to our overview of open calls with details on the call, such as the guidelines and a link to the online application form. You can complete the application form in English or French.

What does the application process look like?

We will publish calls for ideas on this website to which applicants will submit expressions of interest via the online application form. Once these are reviewed, a selected number of applicants will be invited to submit a full application. From these selected applicants at least one organisation will be chosen. For some calls several organisations may be chosen.

Can I submit my application without using the online application form?

Who can benefit from support?

The Fund is primarily foreseen for not-for-profit entities registered in any African Union Member States. However, we will also consider applications from for-profit entities. In both cases organisations must be strongly committed to advancing civic participation. Further, each call will have further specifications, for example with a geographic or thematic focus.

I applied, how do I know my concept note was shortlisted?

All applicants will receive an official response with the result of the selection process. Only selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application.

In which language should I apply?

We accept applications in English and French.

Are civic technologies limited to using the internet?

No, there are other forms of technology that can make a real difference. For example, simple SMS communication on ‘normal’ cell phones can be the central hardware in a civic tech solution. Combined solutions between analog and digital means can also be effective.

How do I inquire about the status of my request for support?

The timeline for each call will be specified in the guidelines. We will notify all applicants of the status of their proposal once the selection process is completed. If you do not hear from us, you may enquire about the status of your application by sending an email to

Can I receive feedback on a proposal that was not selected for funding?

While we would like to provide feedback on all requests for support, due to the large number of requests we receive, we are not able to provide a detailed explanation for each declined application.

What is the average amount of a grant?

There is no fixed amount. The maximum amount for each call is specified in the guidelines. 

May I apply for more than one call at the same time?

Yes, you may submit applications for more than one call, if you are eligible according to the criteria specified in each guideline. However, please note that we intend to not award more than one grant per organisation.
